No time to study the little box. No time to show it to the girls. We had to get out of that shop before we were caught.

I shoved my clothes in a bundle into the dark corner. In seconds, all three of us stood in our white pajamas, looking like we belonged on this planet.

“But you forgot one thing, Murphy,” Cleo said. “We still have only one head.”

“I’ve got that covered, too,” I told her.

I led them to the front window. We gazed at the display of white caps. They were in sets of two. Each hat rested on top of a mannequin head. The heads had real-looking eyes and red painted smiles. Each head rested on a wooden stick.

“Here are our extra heads,” I said. “It’s so lucky that their faces look like ours. I think we can fool them. I think—”

I jumped when I heard a sound behind us. My breath caught in my throat as I saw a salesclerk tap-dance out from behind a curtain at the far wall.

She had a load of white pajamas bundled in her arms. “Can I help you?” she asked.

I knew we were caught. How long would it take her to see we were one-heads? That we were stealing clothes?

“Just looking around!” I called back to her.

She turned to the wall of shelves in back. “If I can help, let me know,” one of her heads said.

I realized she hadn’t looked at us. Too busy with the pile of pajamas.

Maybe … just maybe, my plan would work.

I grabbed a mannequin head, raised it to my shoulders, and stuck the stick down the collar of my pajama shirt. I turned the head till it faced straight forward. Then I grabbed two white caps and placed one on my head and one on the mannequin head.

“Ta-da!” I whispered to the girls. “Check it out. I’m a two-header!”

Cleo shook her head and frowned. “I don’t think so.”

“Maybe it will work,” Orly said. She lifted a mannequin head from the display and pushed the stick down her collar until the head rested next to her real head.

Cleo shook her head. “What about our feet? Our feet will give us away! They don’t look like hooves.”

“We just have to hope the creatures don’t look down at them,” I said. “These mannequin heads are the only choice we have.”

Cleo sighed. “I guess it’s worth a try.”

I helped her tug her second head into place. Then I set white caps on both heads.

“Keep your caps low,” I said. “That makes it hard to see the mannequin face.” I took a deep breath. “Maybe it will work—at least until Rayburne decides to rescue us.”

“Well … we’ll soon find out,” Cleo said.

I took one last glance at the salesclerk, who still had her heads turned.

“We’ll come back later,” I called to her.

Then the three of us new two-headers stepped back out into the street.

“Hey—!” a deep voice cried. “Wait right there!”
